Buckle up, fellow Berners. Bernie Sanders has announced that he will work with Hillary Clinton for the future of the Democratic Party, and to stop Donald Trump. I know some of the most fervent Bernie or Bust folks are going to have a meltdown over this like they did with Elizabeth Warren, but this coalition is necessary for the future of American politics.
Bernie Sanders urged his supporters to run for political office this evening, but didn’t concede to, or endorse Hillary Clinton. It’s no secret though that his campaign is winding down, and he is trying to find a way to bow out while keeping as much leverage as possible against Hillary Clinton and the DNC.
“We must continue our grass-roots efforts to create the America that we know we can become,” he said, sitting in a cramped studio in his hometown while pledging in his starkest terms yet to take on Donald Trump. “And we must take that energy into the Democratic National Convention on July 25 in Philadelphia where we will have more than 1,900 delegates.”
Sanders did not endorse Clinton, as other top figures in the Democratic Party — from President Barack Obama to Sen. Elizabeth Warren — already have done.
“The major political task that we face in the next five months is to make certain that Donald Trump is defeated and defeated badly,” he added, just two days after he met with Clinton in person in Washington. “And I personally intend to begin my role in that process in a very short period of time.” (Source)
As I’ve said before, Bernie Sanders does not need the Democratic Party personally. His seat in the Senate is his for as long as Bernie wants it. He is the most popular senator in America at a time when most lawmakers are despised by their constituents. Bernie Sanders could refuse to work with Hillary Clinton and the DNC, and use his movement to advance the causes he cares about alone.
But for all of his attacks on Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders understands that there is more at stake than his political aspirations. This election is a crucial point in American history, and he knows that.
Facing the most ludicrous candidate the Republican Party has ever come up with, the left cannot afford to splinter over ideological differences, and Bernie Sanders knows that. That is why he will eventually endorse Hillary Clinton and work with her to defeat Donald Trump.
Fellow Bernie Sanders supporters, whether you like Hillary Clinton or not, don’t take your vote and go home. If you live in a state where she cannot possibly win, go ahead and vote for a third party, but I do not intend on doing so. Even if you do not vote for her, please support progressive candidates down the ballot and let’s take back the control of Congress from Republicans. That’s what I want, and I’m sure that’s what Bernie Sanders wants as well.
