The first special forces raid under the Trump administration ended in disaster last weekend, with multiple civilian casualties and the loss of a Navy SEAL. This attack had been approved under President Obama, but had been delayed for “operational reasons.” It is a safe assumption that Trump wanted to prove himself to be tough on terror right out of the gate, and his ego backfired horribly.
After 9/11, George W. Bush announced that Islam was not our enemy. As goofy and incompetent as he was a president, Bush still knew better than to isolate the world’s Muslim population because of terrorist acts of a few hijackers that changed the course of American history for the worse.
President Obama took an even more tactful course which embraced Muslims, and he was absolutely vilified by the rabidly anti-Muslim population of this country as a result. He has now been replaced by Donald Trump who made it a point to demonize Muslims at every possible turn, including suggesting a national registry and issuing a travel ban on people from seven countries where he doesn’t have business interests.
If you thought that wasn’t insane enough already, Trump is also proposing changing a government program intended to stop extremism of all stripes, and aiming it strictly at Islamic terrorism. You know, because there aren’t white supremacists shooting up mosques, or Christians killing Muslims in Africa, right?
The Trump administration wants to revamp and rename a U.S. government program designed to counter all violent ideologies so that it focuses solely on Islamist extremism, five people briefed on the matter told Reuters.
The program, “Countering Violent Extremism,” or CVE, would be changed to “Countering Islamic Extremism” or “Countering Radical Islamic Extremism,” the sources said, and would no longer target groups such as white supremacists who have also carried out bombings and shootings in the United States.
Such a change would reflect Trump’s election campaign rhetoric and criticism of former President Barack Obama for being weak in the fight against Islamic State and for refusing to use the phrase “radical Islam” in describing it. Islamic State has claimed responsibility for attacks on civilians in several countries. (Reuters)
Intentionally or just through sheer egotistical incompetence, Trump is creating a whole new generation of terrorists. Say what you will about Bush and Obama’s use of drone warfare, but Herr Gropenfuhrer is reckless, arrogant and unconcerned about the civilian and military lives he’s wasting.
Keith Olbermann sums it up better than I ever could here:
