Over last couple of days, I have been having so much fun at the expense of Donald Trump. I can’t recall off the top of my head the last time we had an incoming president with so many scandals and conflicts of interests hanging over his head.
There is already a small rift between him and his own party in Congress, as evidenced by Marco Rubio’s rough handling of Rex Tillerson in his Senate confirmation hearings. If Trump thinks he will get a rubber stamp on all of his proposals from the GOP, he’s in for a bit of a surprise since Lindsey Graham, Rubio and even Ted Cruz want a little payback for what he did to them in the Republican primaries.
The revelations that Russian intelligence agencies may have proof of scandalous activities to use against Trump as blackmail are just another brick in the wall against whatever mandate he will try to claim he has.
If you haven’t been paying attention to the news since Monday, Donald Trump finally had an intelligence briefing in which he was informed about the level of influence Russia had over the 2016 elections, and that he was one of their targets.
Via The New York Times:
The first of these reports, published last week, was an unclassified version of a United States intelligence community assessment that concluded with “high confidence” that President Vladimir Putin of Russia had ordered an “influence campaign” aimed at the presidential election, and that his goals included damaging Hillary Clinton and electing Mr. Trump. All intelligence contains an element of uncertainty, but this as good as it gets: a judgment corroborated by the F.B.I., C.I.A. and National Security Agency based on human intelligence, electronic intercepts and forensic investigation into the hacks of the Democratic National Committee and Democratic Party officials.
The second report — dumped on the internet by BuzzFeed News on Tuesday — is a very different animal. As BuzzFeed wrote, “The document was prepared for political opponents of Trump by a person who is understood to be a former British intelligence agent” — now identified as Christopher Steele — and its allegations are “unverified.” If true, the claims in the BuzzFeed dossier are sensational, including extensive contacts between Trump aides and Russian operatives and the Russian accumulation of dirt on Mr. Trump to be used for blackmail. Honestly, I don’t care if there is video of Donald Trump enjoying a golden shower in a Moscow hotel room while Vladimir Putin personally taped the whole thing. We already know that Herr Gropenfuhrer has cheated on his previous wives, bragged about sexually assaulting women, and even remarked on his daughter’s looks in a way that could only be described as creepy and disgusting.
If all of those things that were revealed before the election failed to sway his supporters, these new allegations, if proven to be true, will not change their minds. However, with some mainstream Republicans, it will give them new reasons not to be his enablers, for however long he lasts in office.
No matter what happens with these sordid claims, Trump’s popularity is extremely low, and he hasn’t even raised his hand to take the oath of office yet. Maybe, just maybe, the possibility that he is now the puppet of the Kremlin will give the Republican Party the opportunity they needed to join Democrats in opposing his agenda. I’m not going to hold my breath though.
