Let’s fast forward a few months or years. If everything we know about Russia so far and Trump’s connections to them pan out, he will be impeached or even end up in prison. We will be stuck with Mike Pence or Paul Ryan as president, although those options seem better than what we have now.
The whole Trump presidency is slowly coming apart at the seams. His first international trip was a big fucking joke, and he insulted various members of NATO, along with leaving a message at the most prominent Holocaust site in Israel that resembled a high school yearbook signature.
These last few months of the Trump presidency are not only an embarrassment to the the United States, but an insult to our closest allies. He has insulted Mexico and Australia, whipped up hatred against Muslims, including nations in the Middle East that we are friendly with.
Germany, a key member of NATO, has no confidence in us anymore, which is exactly what Russia wants.
Europe can no longer completely rely on its allies, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Sunday, pointing to bruising meetings of G7 wealthy nations and NATO last week.
Merkel did not mention by name U.S. President Donald Trump, who criticized major NATO allies and refused to endorse a global climate change accord, but she told a packed beer tent in Munich that the days when Europe could completely count on others were “over to a certain extent”.
“I have experienced this in the last few days,” she said. “And that is why I can only say that we Europeans must really take our fate into our own hands – of course in friendship with the United States of America, in friendship with Great Britain and as good neighbors wherever that is possible also with other countries, even with Russia.” (Reuters)
Absolutely none of this matters to Trump supporters. He could spit on a foreign leader, and his people would cheer. Trump could have sex with his daughter in the Oval Office on pay-per-view TV, and I guarantee you more than a few of his supporters would pony up the money to watch.
Remember how Trump said he could shoot someone and none of his supporters would abandon him? He wasn’t joking. As the Russia investigation begins to uncover more and more evidence of collusion with Moscow, Trumpers couldn’t care less.
One person I know who voted for The Donald told me they would send a thank-you note to Putin if it was true, because they hate Hillary Clinton that much.
If his supporters will excuse his mockery of disabled people and bragging about sexual assault, treason will be explained away also. Because that’s what deplorables do.
