One of my favorite films is the movie “Idiocracy.” Set in a dystopic future where ignorance is celebrated and intellect is shunned, Luke Wilson’s character awakens to find himself as the most intelligent person alive.
In this world, humanity is on the brink of starvation thanks to crops being watered with Brawndo -and President Camacho’s staff resembles the regular conservative commenters on your local new station’s Facebook page.
Although it was meant as a comedy, the staggering popularity of Donald Trump’s campaign is further proof that we are well on our way to the dysfunctional society depicted in “Idiocracy.”
In fact, one of the writers of this movie even lamented that this comedy has become a sad representation of our current political system.
“I never expected #idiocracy to become a documentary,” tweeted screenwriter Etan Cohen in an apparent jab at the 2016 presidential race.
Together with “Beavis & Butt-head” creator Mike Judge, Cohen co-wrote the time-travel comedy. The plot revolves around the misadventures of a man who wakes up in a futuristic America only to discover that everyone around him, including lawmakers and government officials, is an idiot.
“I thought the worst thing that would come true was everyone wearing Crocs,” Cohen told his Twitter followers. (Source)
Sadly, comedy and satire have become reality. Even libertarian darling and economic rube Ron Paul has stated that he would not support Donald Trump, and both share a fan base of white nationalists.
Trump has also refused to condemn white supremacist organizations that support him, and continues to espouse the nationalist rhetoric that they love. Whether he personally holds these beliefs doesn’t matter, Trump is more than happy to pretend he has no idea who David Duke is, or what the real history of the KKK is about.
The beliefs of the KKK have many similarities with angry and frustrated Republican voters who support Trump. They blame minorities, liberals, immigrants and intellectuals for their problems – even though these challenges come from decades of voting against their self interests and for conservative politicians who hold up the Bible while wrapping themselves in the flag.
Donald Trump currently holds what looks to be an insurmountable lead over his opponents in the GOP presidential primaries, and will likely be the party’s nominee. The fact that he is considered qualified to hold political office, especially hold the keys to the nuclear codes, is proof that America is indeed a nation run by idiots.
Donald Trump will not “Make America Great Again” but he will make us the laughingstock of the entire world if elected president. It’s up to us to stop that.
