Every four years, our country tears itself apart during the presidential elections. In 2016, Democrats fought amongst themselves over Hillary Clinton versus Bernie Sanders, and the Republican Party succumbed to Stockholm Syndrome with Donald Trump.
Some people screamed “Bernie or Bust” and threatened to take their ball home, or go to the Green Party. Other Bernie supporters like myself accepted his endorsement of Hillary Clinton, and are determined to put the Senate back in Democratic control.
Republicans, even if they didn’t like the idea of Trump as their presidential candidate, are still fired up about opposing Secretary Clinton and any Democrat on the ballot, at all costs. They know that the future of their agenda is at stake, but too many liberals are wrapped up with infighting and ideological purity.
Now is not the time to take our political dicks out for measuring and fighting about who is the most liberal or the most progressive, there is far too much at stake for that.
If Hillary Clinton is elected, we don’t get to raise the flag of victory and then forget about everything for another four years. Republicans will line up to obstruct her just like they did throughout President Obama’s tenure, and they will work to pass unconstitutional laws in every state they can. The assault on women’s reproductive rights will continue, Obamacare will be threatened, and right-wing Christianity will be shoved down our throats through state legislatures and the conservative judicial circuits.
LGBT discrimination will be continued by rogue politicians like Louisiana’s attorney general Jeff Landry, despite Supreme Court rulings and the will of the voters. Planned Parenthood will be attacked over and over again, and environmental laws will be destroyed on the behalf of corporate interests.
The GOP will threaten again to take our government into shutdown after shutdown over every little political temper tantrum. They will block Supreme Court and other judicial nominees, and everything else possible in order to bring the wheels of progress to a grinding halt. If they did this to spite President Obama for being the first black president, the GOP will undoubtedly do this to our first female president.
Even if your ideological purity cannot be reconciled with voting for Hillary Clinton and you want to throw away your vote on Jill Stein or someone else, at least have the decency to support Democrats down the ballot. There is too much at stake to allow the GOP to control any branch of government anywhere in the country any longer.
