For the past few years, ever since I began political blogging, I’ve been in an ongoing skirmish with other “liberal” bloggers. These individuals include the owners and writers for a number of sites such as Occupy Democrats, Reverb Press, Liberal America, Addicting Info – and other sites in their network of liberal clickbait domains.
Initially, the issue arose with a couple of their Facebook pages lifting my content and passing it off as their own. When confronted over this lack of proper credit, my page was targeted by false reports, and years of cyberstalking began. During my time at Forward Progressives, at least one of our original articles was blatantly plagiarized by a writer at Addicting Info, and only removed after the threat of legal action.
What all of these sites have in common is twisting and misrepresenting current news stories, adding a sensational headline, and then cashing in on the traffic as these false or misleading stories go viral across social media. Despite repeated fact checks from Politifact, Snopes and others, Occupy Democrats and their friends continue to spread misinformation that far too many gullible liberals eat up.
Most recently, Occupy Democrats and their friends at Bipartisan Report have floated the story claiming that the DNC was planning on replacing Hillary Clinton because of her battle with pneumonia. If this sounds like a far-fetched rumor circulated by Infowars or Breitbart, it wouldn’t be that much of a stretch, considering both Occupy Democrats and Breitbart have the same lack of media integrity.
There was no factual basis for this story which was based solely on a Twitter rumor, but that didn’t stop Occupy Democrats and their sister sites from running this story which was sure to appeal to diehard Bernie Sanders supporters who have yet to accept the fact Hillary Clinton is the nominee.
This may not seem like a big deal, but let’s consider the fact that Occupy Democrats has over 3.7 million likes on Facebook. For the sake of comparison, that’s more than double what MSNBC has. Bipartisan Report has almost 900,000 likes, Being Liberal almost 1.5 million – and that’s just counting their main pages, not the satellite network of connected pages like US Uncut that also cross-promote their content. Most individuals do not recognize that these sites are all connected, but all it takes is a little observation to realize that this is a coordinated spread of misinformation – for profit.
It’s a damn shame that individuals like these put personal profit over factual information. Being the Fox News or Breitbart of the left isn’t some sort of trophy, it is a disgrace to liberals across the country who are working daily to fight the conservative propaganda machine.
